Hybrid Sheep - North America Introduced

Ovis sp.

Called Corsican sheep (a registered trademark of the YO Ranch of Mountain Home, Texas) on Texas game ranches, a catch-all name that was probably given it by Audrey Schreiner (Mrs. Charles Schreiner III) of the Y.O. Ranch. It is not, however, from the Mediterranean island of Corsica, but is a Texas breed. Sometimes called mouflon-type sheep.

DESCRIPTION Weight can vary from 80-225 pounds (35-100 kg).

Usually these animals are hybrids of European mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon) and domestic sheep (O. aries). The latter is commonly the Barbados black-bellied, a haired (non-woolly) sheep from West Africa via the West Indies. However, other species of wild sheep and other domestic breeds are sometimes part of the mix. Mouflons have been crossed with argalis, bighorns and-reportedly-Dall sheep, resulting in a great variety in coloration, body size, horn size and horn configuration. Large and spectacular horns can result from carefully managed crosses. Color phases are also developed, the white "Texas Dall" and black "Hawaiian ram" being examples.

DISTRIBUTION Free-ranging in parts of California and Hawaii. Also on private properties in Texas and elsewhere.

HYBRIDIZATION Please see descriptive text above.
